Humility is key

For allies, increasing our understanding and support of transgender people, including kids, involves a degree of humility.

We have to humble that part of ourselves that needs to be right, needs to know, and needs to be in control.

And that’s not easy to do. It’s not easy to recognize that what you thought was true about the world maybe wasn’t the entire picture and maybe even wrong.

That’s probably why lots of lawmakers have so little understanding of the transgender community. They don’t want to admit that they don’t have all the answers and actually might have something to learn!

But that humility is what opens us to learning and allows us to invite curiosity, wonder, and maybe even a little mystery.

Because as cisgender people – including parents of trans kids – we’ll never truly understand what it means to be transgender.

But with a little humility, we can understand, support, and embrace more than we did before.
